This place is located in the north of Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain). It is a part of the volcanic tube, seven kilometres long which connects the crater of the volcano with the sea, generated after the eruption of the "Volcán de la Corona", 4000 years ago. The underwater part of this tube is known as the "Túnel de la Atlántida or Atlantis Tunnel", one of the most important volcanic tunnels in the world. It is also known as a "Jameo", this is a natural cave produced by the collapse of the roof of a volcanic lava tube.
It was used as a refuge for the population against the Barbary pirates of North Africa during the 16th and 17th centuries. It is said that "Cueva de los Verdes" owes its name to the surname of a family that used the cave and kept their cattle in the surroundings, although this is not completely reliable.
This cave has different shades of colours such as greenish, reddish or yellowish, the temperature inside is cold and it's very quiet. You can even find an auditorium inside of it where shows and concerts are held. But the most important and curious thing of this place is that it keeps a secret that I can´t reveal because doing it would be so disrespectful to the inhabitants of Lanzarote, so if you want to know of what I am talking about, you must experience it with your own eyes.
My recommendations about this place and surroundings is to visit the cave in October because it is when the musical season starts. Otherwise you will not be able to enjoy the auditorium and, believe me, attending a concert inside a cave is an experience you can't miss.
If you want to have a complete tour, I recommend you visiting "Los Jameos del Agua", they are located inside the same volcanic tube but in the closest part to the coast. It is the first center for art, culture and tourism created by César Manrique, a Spanish artist very famous and influential on the island.
I want to share a personal experience that I had when I went to "Los Jameos del Agua". In this place you can find a lake which contains endemic species. One of those are the "blind crabs". This crabs are white by the lack of pigmentation caused by the darkness of the cave. They are also really small. And, the best part of it is that I could have one of them in my hands!! The little crab tickled me while walking in my hands and since then I have always wanted to have a crab as a pet...
Naiara, las fotos del sitio me parecen muy chulas, y el hecho de que hagan conciertos dentro d ela cueva también. Drake.
