Vicente Calderón & Metropolitano

One of the biggest hobbies of the spanish people is football. And one of the most followed teams is Atlético de Madrid. This team plays in the Metropolitano stadium, but they used to play in the Vicente Calderón stadium. Let's talk about them both.

VICENTE CALDERÓN

This stadium was the place where the Atlético de Madrid players played from 1966 to 2017. In the early years, it was called "Estadio del Manzanares" because of the river next to it. It was not until 1971 that it began to be called Vicente Calderón, in honor of the then president of the club. It was located in Arganzuela, Madrid, and it was classified as a five-star stadium by UEFA (Union of European Football Associations). It had a capacity of 54907 people.

On July 30, 2007, Club Atlético de Madrid, the Mahou beer company and the Madrid city council signed an agreement to use the stadium grounds. Despite the protests of the team's fans, the last game in the Vicente Calderón was played on May 28, 2017.

ESTADIO METROPOLITANO

The Metropolitano stadium it's a stadium that already existed before being used by Atlético de Madrid. The original stadium, called "La Peineta" was completed in 1993. The city of Madrid presented with this stadium some candidacies to host the Olympic Games in 2012, 2016 and 2020. After the failure of these, the facilities were ceded to the club. On December 12, 2008, the club and the Madrid city council signed the transfer to La Peineta and in November 2011 a construction phase of the stadium began from scratch. It was finaly a stadium owned by Atlético de Madrid on September 16, 2017, with the name Wanda Metropolitano ( currently Cívitas Metropolitano, for sponsorship reasons). It has a capacity of 68456 people and it's located in San Blas - Canillejas, Madrid.

Although the Vicente Calderón no longer exists, I keep very fond memories of that stadium, since it was there the first time I saw a football match in person with my parents. It was a great day!
Regarding the Metropolitano Stadium, I think it's worth visiting if you travel to Madrid. It's a beautiful and modern stadium and, if you like football, you will surely enjoy the atmosphere inside.
