Covadonga, Asturias
Covadonga is a town located in the autonomous community of Asturias, a beautiful community in the north of Spain, right by the Cantabric sea, a part of the northern Atlantic Ocean that gets its name from the community of Cantabria, right by Asturias.
Why did I choose this town?
The answer to this question is quite simple, it’s very beautiful in many ways (naturally and culturally) and it is full of history ranging from the Middle Ages until today with its very famous symbol, a very small church inside a cave on the side of a cliff with many waterfalls around it. This cave served as refuge for the Arabs when they were getting attacked by the Christians, starting an important event called the Reconquest of Spain by the Christians, lasting until 1492.
If you go up the road, there is a very beautiful lake in the nearby mountain, especially in the winter, when it’s frozen over, but sadly the weather is quite cold then (I went there and it rained all of the time).
So go in good weather!
But really, the most important thing to visit is the church in the cave, it’s beautiful and the nearby towns will also impress you, getting a bite to eat on the way.
